Healthy Balls: A Simple Guide to Self-Checks for Men
20th April 2025->
Let’s talk about something important—your balls. While testicular cancer isn’t the most common cancer in men, checking your testicles regularly can help detect any changes early. And the best part? It’s quick, easy, and can literally save your life.
Why You Should Check Your Testicles
Getting to know what’s normal for you makes it easier to spot anything unusual. Regular self-checks (around once a month) help you catch potential issues like testicular cancer or other conditions early.
Men and boys should start checking their testicles from puberty onwards (around age 12 and up). If you’ve got ‘em, check ‘em—it’s that simple.
What to Look For
When you do a self-check, keep an eye (and a hand) out for:
✔ Lumps or swelling – Your testicles should feel smooth and firm, but not hard. Any new lumps or unusual swelling should be checked by a doctor.
✔ Changes in size, weight, or shape – It’s normal for one testicle to be slightly bigger or hang lower, but sudden changes aren’t.
✔ Pain, discomfort, or anything unusual – If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it.
How to Check Your Testicles
The best time to check is during or right after a warm bath or shower when the scrotum is relaxed. Here’s how:
1️⃣ Hold your scrotum in the palm of your hand.
2️⃣ Use your other hand to gently roll one testicle at a time between your thumb and fingers.
3️⃣ Feel behind both testicles—the small, soft tubes (epididymis) can sometimes become hard, swollen, or painful, so check for any changes.
Don’t Panic—Just Get It Checked
Not every lump or change means cancer, but it’s always best to see a doctor if you notice anything unusual. Early detection is key, and a quick check-up could make all the difference.
